MOC: Rivendell at dawn

$

Combining LEGO with other art forms is not what you see very day, not counting the non-purist customs, which can of course be excellent if done by skilled people. The main idea behind this Middle-Earthean scene was to use a painting as a backdrop. Well, okay, the other idea was to create a scene to show my Galadriel design without yucky white backdrop.
Some of you might think this scene is only from the Hobbit movie, but actually it is not in conflict with the books. There were a meeting of the White Council in Rivendell, though it was around a hundred years before Bilbo's trip. But yes, the setting are from the movie scene, including that watercolor backdrop (I actually use watercolour paper as a backdrop nearly always, but usually it's white!) with the mountains and the sunrise. There are also pics with different focuses on Brickshelf gallery, when modified.

GroundWeb MK45-Toad is an excellent unit to increase firepower of mobile ground forces. Packed with heavy D4K-cannon and powered by seven AAA batteries, "The Bufo bufo" can crawl through the deadliest frontiers.

Yep, I began with those binocular tracks a long time ago, and evolved into a small tank, and then met a mortar-helmet soldier and they lived happily ever after.

A couple of Suits

Summer is here which means a pleasing increase in LEGO time. Here's a couple of suits I threw together (was supposed to clean my room, but the classic thing happened).

On left one I tried to achieve somewhat Megaman-like leg design with those helmets. I'm not completely happy with it, as the angle is quite odd, but I still like the shape of the helmet part . The upper torso is rather basic stuff with the always-so-useful 1x1 SNOT brick with five studs.

The right one is basic Zeessi-style suit. It is somewhat based on my old Dieselpunk Suit's frame. The main idea was to use that windscreen dish as a shield.  As the Boba Fett helmet/jetpack (only Boba part I own) came in, I added some green to mach. I think the color scheme has quite a good forest camouflage pattern.

MOC: Dori

Suddenly, a dwarf out of nowhere! I was about to post a WIP picture of this guy earlier today, but though damn, I'll finish him now and post the whole MOC.

Dori, an elder brother of Nori and Ori, portrayed by talented Kiwi actor Mark Hadlow, is a fuzzy guy who is very keen oh his style.

I built the head a few weeks ago when waiting a BL order which came two days ago. The ornamental beard and hair was fun to build with all those greebles. I tried many different jaw options but chose the design which uses that strange but very useful pin hole piece and couple of minifig arms. It's not the stablest one, but stays together on display, and is easily the best looking.

I couldn't achieve the reddish-salmon-lavender color scheme f the apparel but went with the beautiful dark red bricks as LEGO did with their minifigure. I still managed to add some salmon on the camisole with three 4x4 plates I picked up from Chaos Pick-a-brick few years ago. There is also a twisted cord near the neck, but it's unfortunately mostly covered by the beard case.  On the torso, I'm especially happy with the shoulder area. I picked the shoulder pieces for this mere use and the 3x3x3 cones worked surprisingly well as a upper arms.

Dori also has the most poseable arms of my dwarf crew so far. They have three 360 degree joints and three hinge joints, not counting the fingers. That allows surprisingly dynamic poses on a SYSTEM-build figure without any ball joints.

Dori also has his weapon array of a strong shortsword and bolas, a South American native hunting weapon. Both hand on his belt, but I also built a hand-held equivalents (see the last photo). I'm glad of the natural feel that the freely hanging chains give to this MOC. I also quite like the scabbard of the sword. The broad design was easy to achieve with LEGO bricks.

With six finished dwarfs and Bombur-in-progress (Still waiting the LUGBULK order to get 1x2 olive green plates) I'm now on the middle of dwarf project. But I have already a strong plans on Bofur, and I believe you can wait for a couple of others during the summer. Smaug be prepared! Hopefully on the form that includes fr actioning the dragon into small pieces.

MOC: Steampunk Qwena: The new outfit

Sometimes an idea to a MOC (or, as in this case, mod) appears in a dream. I don't remember in what kind of dream the idea of using Queen Anne's Revenge's sails as a dress came into my brain, but I think it had pretty much nothing to do with the rest of that dream.

Before buying those sails from Bricklink I looked up their sizes and proportions and made a paper copies of them so I could plan the MOC beforehand. Later I realized that the copies were a bit too small, but well, MOCing and life are full of surprises...

I ordered the sails along ofter stuff from Bricklink shop De lütte Steene Deel which seems to get closed right now. It's a very well working store and excellent package, I would recommend this seller to anyone when the store opens again.

There are also some other changes done in Qwena on this update. I made the hat a bit taller with cool stickered TECHNIC hub which worked well with the golden goggles. I also altered the boots a bit, adding a lot more golden buttons connected to tracks. I kept the hip-bag of the old version, but added a rohirrim shield hanging on a golden chain as a pocked watch, which are often seen hanging on a belt on steampunk costumes.

I also completely rebuilt the neck/upper chest area. To be honest, the simple black HF-joint of the old version looked terrible and was a very lazy choice, as some of you noted to me on Flickr (as you can see, your critic was taken seriously; congratulate yourselves, or take a donut). But making it better wasn't easy either. Actually, it was among the hardest things I have ever built, especially because I first used old-style ball joint and had to take the full thing apart to switch it into 2008-style to get more friction. The section is pretty much SYSTEM, and there are also pieces that are connected only via friction (Okay, pretty much all LEGO pieces are connected via friction, but I guess you know what I mean). But I'm happy with it, even when It's not as stable as the old version. But it stays together on display.

This MOC was also quite painful to photograph. No, I'm not talking about the white-on-white issue, I dealt with it quite well on Gimp. I'm talking about the wind. It fell down two times on the porch and I had to pick up the pieces and built some areas again. A herd of mosquitoes didn't help at all, as this is still the gorram summer of Finland. So, I took most of the photos inside, with a bit worse lighting. You can see them on Brickshelf gallery.

MOC: Same

Summer is a great season for MOCing. Here's a new guy from Bionicle frontier. Same, codenamed "The Naked Bat", is a Selakhian (Pridak's pre-mutation species) moderator of Bio-Klaani from Klaanon project.

Same is a brother-in-arms with Bladis despite their very different battle styles. When Bladis, ironically, enjoys blasting his enemies in pieces from other side of the desert with a big gun with a beautiful long-teeth female on his side, Same wants to watch his enemy from eye to eye while slicing their "important bits" with his scythe or one of his many knives.

The main idea behind Same was to build a long, slender figure with a hue of bat or shark motif. The rib bone armor was a result of that, giving a spice of horror and shark-tooth elements to the character. I also like the pattern it gives against the pitch-black torso, while the other white parts are drawn far from the body to mask end the ends of the limbs.

The utility straps were the other thing. They are reference to Snake's accessories from Metal Gear series, as Same's character is somewhat based on him. There is the green moderator stone and six knives hanging from them, plus two tucked on the sides of his boots. I wanted to put the leg straps on different heights to make them look as a individual accessories and not parts of the armor.

Steampunk adventurers

It's always good time for steampunk! Here's some restless adventurers, stay tuned for more.

Cecily M. Holster, a suspended monorail pirate. Smart fellow with a sense of moral like a flaky plaster.  Has a lot of experience on the gondola pillaging ground and sure knows the rail network.
Edwin Pillingshot McBlaine is a smuggler and an old goon. With his home-build stolen armour and elegant friendly mutton chops he's ready to face any danger from airship-attacking kraken to feisty Armada of the Kingdom's army.
Pantelomeus T. Ongu is a cyclops from Northern Highlands and old smuggling partner of McBlaine. Ongu has probably ever more handsome muttonchops than his human friend, and he's used to facing the dangers topless and with only a leather overalls. But then again cyclops skin is far thicker than human skin.
Alinen Flora Boing is a young and skilled treasure hunter with hyper-modern Stingray Raygun capable of blasting rocks to rubble and crop to flour. She's flashy and snazzy and pizzazzy and pretty much everything with Z:s and energy.
Aikapoika, a time traveller from Victorian Era. The friendly muttonchopped  hero of the time is armed with the Chrono Cannon, weapon that was once just a mere gun but was inducted with the electromagnetic tachyon quark flows and turned into very unforeseeable rod. This time he only has a time-traveling monocle on his left eye instead of the normal goggles, but sometimes even a time travelers change their style.

The Age of Steam had also other folk than wild adventurers. These five persons are an example of the rich life of steampunk cities.

Godalming Jarvis is an infamous goon and scroundel. He escaped his old fellow mafia-men from Italy, arrived on London with a stolen airship and became the personification of London's Steam Mafia. Jarvis has a whole set of nasty tools and apparatus to help him on the broad road of crime.
Mr. Chruston "Babyface" Windmill, the Prime Minister of Steam Empire, is well known for his thick cigars and big belly. But in fact he's really talented politician and speaker. He has consulted a big regions to be part of the Empire and is currently making plans to solve the suspended monorail pirate issue. Some folk even rumor that his "belly" is actually a undercovered piece of communication apparatus so he is always in touch with his counsellors and the Queen.
Mrs. Margaret Windmill is a beloved wife of the Prime Minister. His spectacular cooking talent is the reason behind his husband's body shape. Margaret is very keen of the hottest style and famous of her very big hair accessories.
Rudolph Adolph Harland Jr. is an inventor of the amazing picture-capturing device. With a turn of a lever and sudden bolt of light he can capture the moment on a paper. He's also one of the country's funniest men with his plushy frog friend he uses to amuse his customers while taking the photo.
Victor G. Gononde, a private investigator and vigilante, has sworn to catch his arc enemy Godalming Jarvis. He has been on the streets for centuries, what can be seen on his gray hair (still on ponytail) and incredibly strong moustache. He's man who keeps his enemies far and friends ever further.

Here's the last steampunk minifigure barf for this time, a crew straight from the world of airships.

Gladys Barns, a proletarian from the boiler and fire box rooms. The depths of huge airships are her kingdoms, and she doesn't take custodial high-level bosses' wailing easy.
Homblom Promethean Ongu, brother of the ginger-bearded smuggler cyclops, is a Governor of the Eastern parts of the Empire.  He uses an upmarket gold armour and a fez as the signs of his dominance when he travels around his realms.
Grand Admiral Everard Hanks Dennison III von Matribrillian is one of the leading officers in the Queen's Air Navy. With praxis from thousands of battles, he can commande the airship forces with a razor-sharp exactness and rhino-like strength.
Captain Wilfred Flan Kirkensbrand is a wealthy captain of his own ship SS Pickle. Kirkensbrand is a boy that never gets too old and is always curiously amused by most of the things he faces, despite he's on his early 80s.
Sophia Goodwyn Goldenplover is a scholar and explorer who travels around the world on various airships studying things from ornithology to geography and astronomy.

MOC: Gambrodon

It's nice to see that the big LEGO Communities and sites like The Brothers Brick and Eurobricks have paid more attention on action figure themes. Eurobricks has now an Action Figure month, and this is my entry to "Brain Attack Before and after-contest.

Gambrodon lizards are herbivorous critter from their native planet Runksukka. They are also very popular pets in Makuhero City because of their cute appearance, playfulness of a puppy and curiosity of a five-year-old. The idea behind this lizard was to use very similar head than the mutated one's but with huge, cute eyes and blunt teeth and a lizard-like low body build. The tail is rather similar to the big one. I looked HF Brain Attack screenshots to see how the official characters mutated with the slugs: The body build altered but the head was pretty much the same.

And so, when a vicious brain slug attack and attaches itself to Gambrodon's head, it launches a very fast and nasty evolution...

...And turns the cute critter into terrible dinosaur.

I haven't built that much animal creatures with Bionicle/HF parts so this was an pleasant challenge. It started with the head. I had had a similar head tablescrap around for few months, and I took it and gave it more evil-looking eyes, some more teeth and built that red brain-slug. It was easier to integrate a brick-built slug into the head and I don't even have any of those official ones.
This was also a surprisingly fast build, probably around five or six hours of intensive summer day-off building. After the head I build the neck, then the legs, which needed couple of tries to get then right. I'm especially glad of those tubings, which add both robot-like feel and natural muscle-like curves. The dinosaur arm pieces on the torso are another "motif" I wanted to use to add texture.

The tail was interesting. I needed a tail heavy enough to balance the MOC, but stiff enough to keep the pose. Those two-toe feet pieces worked surprisingly well. They are connected to basic HF joint pieces with one ball on the middle. The tail can be posed, but is held together firmly enough to keep it stiff. The spikes on the tip on the tail create a connection with the shape of the head, and the red pattern on Skrall sword adds a color splash to associate with the red slug.

Temporary update

No, I'm not dead.

But I have been pretty much away from keyboard for two weeks and you won't see me during the next week neither. I have been traveling around Finland, met friends and relatives, been on a rock festival (Ilosaarirock) and also bought some LEGO (Monster Fighters Crazy Scientist set on sale and a few kilograms (and that's terribly lot) of Bionicle parts for 30€ from my 10-year-old cousin who didn't need them. There were something like thirty canister sets and some small sets (but sadly no titans) and now I feeling I'll never need new Bionicle again.

But I have also built stuff with the small bits of spare time at home. You can expect some small Dieselpunk stuff and bigger steampunk stuff, and my LUGBULK order likely arrives during the next week I'm on a trip so I can finally finish the Goddamn Bombur then.

But now I'm in a hurry so see you later,

MOC: Bombur

Look people, I'm here! Apologizes for the silent two weeks, but they stood a reason. My local post office, which isn't the most reliable public service around here, kept my LUGBULK bricks for two weeks because they forgot to send me the note and code of the parcel. That caused me a very uninspiring time, but I luckily got those pieces yesterday thanks to our active LUG members back in south. Thank you, Lönkkas, Xsane and others who participated on sorting the bricks.

But yeees, I have a got a dwarf here! He's the big one, and the long-awaited one (Not for poor Bilbo and his parlour, though), Bombur, brother of Bofur (Who is work-in-progress) and cousin of Bifur (Finished and also modified after the taken photos).

From the start of my dwarf project I knew I would build Bombur with Lowell-sphere-style body. The round shape was rather easy to catch with the all-over SNOT (okay, that doesn't sound very clean) techniques. I'm also very proud of the studs here: Bombur is a working-class dwarf and his clothes  a bit rugged and rough in texture.

Bombur's big head was surprisingly easy. I have a rather limited collection of orange, but it was enough and I didn't even have to order any bricks for the head from Bricklink. Bombur of course has his double chin made of boat studs and also the bald spot (unfortunately cannot be seen on these photos) built using the same piece.

Unlike some dwarves, Bombur had a pleasing, a bit brighter color scheme to work with. Olive green 1x2 plates (bought 100 from LUGBULK) work rather well with the orange beard. The build was fresh also because the strong difference in the clothing: While other dwarves have long coats, Bombur has his shirt tucked in his trousers and therefore the shoes (which are not boots as usual but a round shoes built using the small catapult pieces) were completely different than those I built before.

REVAMP: Monster Fighters Automobile

I bought 9466 The Crazy Scientist and his Monster earlier this year from Oulu with rather good sale (43€, original price was 65€). The car included in the set caught my eye. I loved the idea of 8-wide old-timer car with monster-fighting apparatus and big round shapes; medium blue color was just perfect. But the design itself was seriously lacking. There weren't enough medium blue, some shapes were awful and it was full of annoying flick-fire-missiles.

When I arrived home from my trip, I nearly immediately started to revamp the car. I build it again from start, made the base a bit different (Read: Removed the useful pieces not necessary there) and re-designed most of it to add medium blue. I made the buffers light gray and go nearly all around the vehicle, added big exhaust pipes and better weaponry: Kept the radar but replaced the fick-fire missiles with bigger cannons. There's also a new driver, as the set didn't feature anyone behind the steering wheel!

WIP: Steampunk cityscape

This Victorian steampunk cityscape is probably biggest of my many current projects. I have built it quite a lot without posting a WIP stuff, because it just have been more tempting to build on than write about it.

The project is (approximately) measured 60x48 studs and the ground is two plates and three bricks high. This raise takes some more bricks (I'm planning to use DUBLO bricks on the base) nut allowed me to built the channel and basements to the building. There is a speakeasy under the shallow building on the right, and there will be something similar on the other side -which is not built yet- too.

I build the red-black building's facade when I did some concepts of urban Victorian  building. I have plenty of those 70s old window pieces, and they give a nice effect with their detailed frames. The roof is build using those strange modified plates with TECHNIC holes underside, giving a look typical to buildings of that age. I'm rather happy with that. The dark red autumnal leaves are from my LUGBULK order and I like how they match with the building.

MOC: Belsa

Summer is about the end, or at least the vacation, but there's still lot of building going on on my LEGO room. There is, as you (hopefully) know, the Steampunk City and a hobbit hole under construction, but it doesn't reject me from building other stuff too. This devil gal was an outcome of a day of Bionicle building. I had no clear concept at the start, except making a female character with red tights, and the ideas swapped many times during the building.

I thinks she is a some sort of Hell's Waitress with a chainmail skirt and corset armour. I also thought of making a pair of rollerskates, but they wouldn't have probably worked so well with the shin design, so I kept those basic shoes (or boots).

I'm very proud of the "tricks" used in this build: The chainmail skirt and the elastic band corset. I got 150 of those dark-silver (or gunmetal or titanium metallic or what it is called) chain links from LUGBULK last year, and finally found a good use to them. They are connected to rigid hose on the front and rubber band on the back. The chain link motif extends to the shoulder straps of the corset. The strings on the chest piece are those rather stiff red elastic bands I fortunately had enough; no idea what sets they are from. I might use this technique also on upcoming builds as it came out so well.

The head was a bit tricky part. I was going to use the same emotion-less style I used on Karmenna and Lady Liberty 3000, but went with a bit different style with a stylised pair of stern eyes. I think it gives a surprisingly lot character to this MOC. The black messy hair and devil horns were going to be here from the moment I decided to go with the red skin.

Steampunk Middle-class

It's steampunk minifigure time again! My Victorian cityscape is still on progress, but it needs some inhabitants.
Freddie "Booger" Brandon is a guileful keeper of a not-so-cozy speakeasy where the outcast of the city meet those who want to hop on adventure or know the rumors of the underworld. Booger is famous of the "best" absinthe in the town. He is also a rock-hard veteran of bar brawl, as calling the Police Enforcement to a illegal boozer is not always a good idea. He's not afraid of whacking rookies with a thick wooden board; not a bit.
Isabel Michaelton-Ostrich has lived his whole life in the city. She's pretty much an ordinary girl. Sorry, nothing to tell about. She uses no cog corsets or have any brass artificial limbs or not even a top hat. Not everyone dresses like that, it's steamPUNK, not steamordinaries! A viper!
Nival Iccule is an Italian-born artist. He is said to have some contacts with the organized crime, but that's most likely only a hoax. He has painted a lot of banners to the public buildings of the city, because there is never enough printed tiles to work with.
Ahmed-Herman von Kurriwurst has come to the city from Turkey and thought Germany. He's the unknighted baron of sausages, frankfurters, hot dogs and so on, freshly in the natural vein. They may taste "funny" at first but soon you will find yourself buying an other one! And again. And again. And

Miss Aline Brongley is a rookie adventurer. He has no passion of treasures or a special vendetta against someone, but she really enjoys as fast-paced adventurers. It is also rumored that this cool purple jacket is a collar of a being from an another world.

The Sober Charm of Bourgeoisie

$

Here's the second steampunk citizen fig barf for my cityscape project. I was going to post this earlier, but had surprisingly lot of work from school and driving academy and also bough a lot of used LEGO from my neighbours and it took hours to sort them (I'm still not finished, thank god it's Friday).

Lisbeth Hendawn, a sophisticated maid servant, has served most of the rich and powerful families and kins of the city, so he has a lot of knowledge about the secret doorways, safe code numbers, closet skeleton and so on. Most of the Bourgeoisie believe she is the most reliable keeper of secrets, and she has been serving the Prime Minister Windmill for some time now, but only a few know what has happened between her and dirty-but-august cop V. G. Gononde on Booger Brandon's bar...
Merchant Ferdinand P. Olsen has long history of overseas market and he has been under foreign influences for most of his life. He's half Swede from his mother's kin, uses mostly French clothes and has recentely growth interest in left-wing politics of the east.
Doktor Friedrich von Schulz is a German gentleman with a manly beard, precious pocket watch and spiffy bowler.  He has seen world, had some adventurers with Edisonades at the New Continent, but after all he set at the Empire's capital with his wife. With his free time he has habit of shooting, anthropology and toy frogs.
Lady Birgitta von Schulz is Doktor Friedrich's dear wife, much younger by age, but deeply in love with his dear husband's money, manly beard and toy frog collection.
Miss Clara Swandon is trend-setting society queen and the adamant head of the house. He follows no orders and is bit of punk, despite the fact the is in favour of high-class meetings and dinners. As an example of that, she prefers to use men's waistcoats.
Mr. Pory Swandon is pretty much a servant of his wife, but that doesn't bother him, as his dear Clara gives him money to play at the casinos. He's the uncrowned king of the Liar's Shithead. That may sound a game unsuitable for high class, but believe me, that game is full of talented maneuvers.

The Extraordinary Voyagers

And here's the last steam-figbarf for now! These dudes are not as citizens as the previous barfs. Guess they are not from the city!
Katey Bruckhire is a hunter of occultist artifacts. He has fought the risen dead factory workers and fled from the great ancient beasts on the seven seas to make sure these dangerous objects don't fall into the wrong hands.
Sir Daniel Slothabury is Katey Bruckhire's partner on the dangerous adventures. He has a highly spruce clothes and his twin revolvers are loaded with silver, genesis-steel or tartaric acid depending on the enemies they are fighting.
No one knows where this lonely ranger comes from, but at least he is grown up in Scotland. He has the best-class weapons and he is said to able to work in the bottom of the sea or the oxygenless layers of the atmosphere. No one knows either what he is after, but at least he hunts something. Or someone.
Arnold Northlax is an adventurer and a pioneer of the northern polar cap. He has been aboard many ships discovering arctic areas, both flying and floating (ships, not areas). He has Finnish ancestors and his grandfather was captain of Walrus III, the first submarine to discover the north pole underwater.
Miss Evelin Sharley is a impulsive sort of woman with a very sharp rapier. He comes and stings those who have done ill; lived dirty life or stepped on the merchant. And her long dress and hair are never on the way.
Edwin Hemingroad is a famous huntsman and owner of one of the biggest animal trophy collections of the world. His primary hunting route is Africa, but he has also fished sharks and pursuited albatrosses with a fighter plane. He's planning to write a book called Funeral to Weapons but he hasn't got time for that yet.

MOC: The Nightly Streets of Shangai K8000

The dark streets of the Asteroid Shanghai K8000 tell many stories and not all of them are sugary. Tonight Blacktron boss Albert von Koponya and his hemisperson Grookab are solving some cosmetical issues with local space pirate gangs. Jaakko "Death's Knuckleduster" Heimonpoika is speechless to say the least when Grookab's three-barrel vaporizer shotgun sweeps the paving with his dear brother.

This MOC was built for Finnish LUG Palikkatakomo's summer contest. The idea behind the contest was to build something with "Special useless pieces" with the Space Pirates theme. My NPU piece was (Or were, and still are, as there are two of those) those red pump pieces from 2008 Bionicle Mistika line's Nynrah blasters. They are used as Asian-style paper lamps here and are light up with a couple of red light bricks. I've had this idea for ages, but didn't have enough light bricks to use it before.

The cheese pavement with poor gangta's remains is an another trick here, but otherwise it was a pretty straightforward build. I like the minifigs.

Some people requested a break-up of My Gambrodon MOC's custom built brain slugs, and here it is (A bit late; sorry! I've got rather lot to do these days). The photos are not perfect, as they are taken inside, but I think you can see the design clearly enough.

Gambrodon won the second place on Eurobricks' Action Figure Months Before and After contest. The first place went to CIDDi's excellent Marcus Fisher, which was among my favourites on the contest. Thanks to everyone who voted me!
