MOC: Moon Mayhem

Now this MOC is a bit stranger one. It was built for Finnish LUG Palikkatakomo's Space contest in couple of days. I was not alarmed for it, as I thought the entries have to take part in Exhibit we'll have at Helsinki Observatory for three months. Now I don't have anything against putting my MOCs on display for three months; I think that would be excellent, as I never seem to have enough display space for my builds. But Helsinki is 500 kilometers away and that would mean two trips, so it would have been a bit tricky.

So I went and built this scene (Our hero must save Moon Baron's daughter from Plutonian mining robot warrior) in supercharged battle-build-mode while struggling with some other (even stranger) projects (coming soon). I had no sense what I was doing with this; At the beginning it was going to be something somewhat serious, some öögämöögä alien dude in cool space suit. I built a head from him. It used Jar Jar Binks head and mixel eyes and a homemaker cap, and I might do something with it. Or not. Likely it'll sail around my tables for nine months and then be disassembled for parts.

Somehow it turned out to be battle robot straight from old B-movie. Actually I was inspired by Fordibben Planet film poster a friend of mine bought from London, though I hadn't seen it for three months and in my memories the robot in it looked more like this. Oh well. This came out very toy-like, which encanhed the B-movie feel; Black and red works always. I also tried to use as much odd pieces as possible; there is a dice as the head, old train cargo pieces as pauldrons, egg dome from Agents set Robo Attck and one of my three Rock Riders drills (a late addition; I polished it and everything). But I'm most proud of the leg armor, which uses couple of old town crib pieces bought from a convention. The work rather nicely with CBBS armor.

The minifigs... I wanted to damsel in distress (this is from old B-movie, after all) have enough odd bling. The princess head from series something was rather nice. The hero was more armored and serious at the beginning, but I wanted to go completely pulp and make him as odd as possible. He has astronaut torso from series one, moustache piece, vampire/Wolverine hair, Vitruvius's cape, TRANSPARENT ORANGE CHAINSAW and trans-medium-blue shield. Do not mess with him. He's ridiculous.

Brickfilm + MOCs: Murmeli - Groundhog

 I woke up this morning
And so forth
Groundhog day
Slowly turns into night
 I face the pillow
ponder things a bit
what is this all about
journey from light to darkness
Groundhog morning!
Groundhog day!
Groundhog evening!
Groundhog night!
Groundhog week!
Groundhog month!
Groundhog year!
Groundhog ETERNITY!

Yes, you are right: New brickfilm from Vuhvelituotanto (E. Karvinen & E. Okkonen)! This is a Tekrafilm, which means it is a film with Tekramusic on it. This is our second tekrafilm; The first was Märkä Saippua (Wet Soap) and somehow I missed to blog about it, despite it being artistic and groundbreaking music movie.
This song, Mumeli, is tragic story about rodents and everyday life written and composed by J. Hyrkäs (The translation here was done by me to make thing clearer to ones not familiar with our outstanding Finnish language). The newest tekra-album had 12 tracks and we chosed the shortest one (or one of two 1:14 songs) as we don't have all day (except that I do - for a while). Filming took something like two hours. Building the set pieces took significantly longer. I have no idea about the post-production, it's not my concern.

This film had two set ideas. Another one was this Groundhog's bedroom. It is rather advanced brickfilm set, being almost studless and far bigger than minifig scale (let's call it Groundhog scale). LUGBULKed sand green bricks and brick bricks created nice wall profile; with the tan floor it remind me of my building room. There had to be a bed too, as it is indeed bedroom. Actually there was two different beds, this one used on set piece pictures, and another so called "effect-bed" used in the film, with internal "groundhog hinge" and slot for our anxious animal. You might spot the difference!

Other furniture and set dressing was added; bedside table, reading lamp, potted plant, some books, alarm clock and a glass of water. These turned out useful during the filming, as most of the exciting script was improvised.

There was also this another, even more progressive set piece, that I'll call "Groundhog Eternity". You have probably seen some cool gradient backdrops on vignettes and such, but we have moving gradient times-of-day backdrop n our film! This is rather tall MOC, probably my tallest, being over 60 cm (two feet) tall. It's mostly build using basic bricks but has some special bits too. The sun design (hands on a plate) is stolen from some ancient Barney Main's vignette.

So, we placed the simple "outdoors" set at the edge of a table, made a tall pile of science magazines next to it placed our "Groundhog Eternity" on the pile. Then we removed the magazined two or three at the time, setting the sun, lowering the moon and bringing the night. On his post-production duties Esko made it faster, inverted it and used other data tricks to make it works. Odd stuff! I actually also tried to build a rising/lowering mechanism tha used some TECHNIC tyres to roll the backdrop, but it was just too heavy to work. Sometimes simpler is better.

MOC: Lingeán

Ding and dong and trallallaa! It's the first actually cold day of winter here (though it'll warm up again next week, sadly) and I bring you the third piece of my Four Seasons project and naturally it's Spring, named Lingeán; a bit of a pun here, if you pardon. Lingeán is Gaeilge for Spring, but not in sense of season, but a device (Spiral spring). Oh boy it's funny. But Season-Spring would have been something like "Eaargh" so I went with this.

There were, again, some key ideas behind this. First and foremost I wanted her to be bare-footed, with tons of flowers sprouting behind her footsteps. Using those hot air balloon parts as flower-like dress was another. I won that set, (my first Friends set - Don't like them minidolls but nice hairpieces) on LUG event on "Build scene of marriage crisis in the kitchen with parts of 40107 Winter Skating Scene in ten (?) minutes". They worked nicely with Karzahni's beautiful marbled armor plates. I have used them in similar fashion before.
With bare feet I wanted to make bare legs too, a thing I had never tried in tan before. What a challenge! I think they look alright, the shaped could be a bit stronger, but it works. But it's very fragile and hard to balance, and impossible to pose otherwise. I think I should change the ankle joints into ratcheted ones for the sake of stability.

The upper torso consist mostly of rather ordinary green pieces bought mostly from LEGO stores in Britain and LUGBULK. Rahksi heads used as shoulder pads make the total number of Bionicle parts used here four. That's quite bit less than on the previous ones, Forfhuarú and Fómhar. The lower arms are white; Partly due to make a difference, and also to save me from using precious tan 1x1 tiles with clips. I don't have many and couple of them are partly broken.

The hair's the best part here in my opinion. It took a while. Actually, this final design come together in matter of minutes; But it took hours to get there. I started with reddish brown bows used on this final version, but tried to built sort of curled hair tied behind the back; But the curves were too big. I battled with it for some time and ditched the idea, end went with some radical colors, including glorious medium azure. The previous MOCs in this series had white and orange hair, neither of which look completely natural but are nor super strage. But the azure didn't work, and I didn't have enough right pieces. So I picked up the bows again, and made them turn sideways in an extremely wind-swept way. It looked great! Some curved slopes in the end made it look natural, and even one of those odd hollow spike pieces in reddish brown finally found its use.

In all, this is not very radical figure; Neither was Fómhar, the autumn girl. But Forfhuarú (Winter which I still don't remember how to spell) had those huge cold wings and the icicle crown, so I think the summer one's got to have something special and more fantasy-esque. But I do not know what, so time will tell. See you.

MOC: Winter Village Brewery

Yeah, it's this time of the year again! Wait, it is not. Or well, that might be a bit odd statement. But hey, it's several degrees plus outside (with our Celsius system - That's logical, in fact) and misty and rains a lot (water). But it's still almost Christmas (I'm not in the mood due to the weather though), I've watched the new Star Wars and this is my entry for Eurobricks's Expand The Winter Village Contest VI. As humorous side note, I also took part of their first such contest in 2010 with this Cáfe... Look a those glorious quality photographs! Oh boy...

Yeah, the contest. The prizes are quite awesome, so I'm going to be honest and say they motivated me to build this. This is a brewery. Small ale breweries seem to be popular right now. Coincidence? I think so. This is brewery/pub due my recent trip in Britain with few chums which included nice amount of sitting inna pub. Bennets Bar in Edinburgh was particularly pleasant one and one of the high points of our journey.

I know there would be a bar counter with taps, dark red chairs, brewing containers with pipes (which I know nothing about, though), publican's apartment on upstairs, and last but not least, three old geezers outside the pubs with pints. They exist everywhere. I'm sure you'll find them in any of the seventy-three corners of the multiverse. And then there would be the vehicle, because several of Winter Village sets have one, and I like old cars.

I began building with pub's floor. It uses old good "45 degree 1x1 bricks and tiles stuck between them" technique to make an interesting pattern. The colors are white and yellow (beer) that nicely brighten the room. The brewery side followed. Walls ended up being sand green with LUBGULKed masonry bricks; I have quite lot of them, though most of them ended up in this. Some earthly colors (tan, reddish brown, bleys, greys) were used here too make some architectural and promotional details; The sign read "ALE" because it was only beer-related word with thee letters I came up with. It also means sale or discount in Finnish, and I suppose it'll cause confusion on Finnish exhibits.

After a while I realised it had to have a tower. My buildings usually end up with a tower. I like towers. There are not many buildings with towers in Finland, especially in my hometown, which is rather recent one with little or no history; In 1600s there were two occupied houses; A true story.

I think the tower makes sense as it can be used to store malt used in brewing and also makes the pub visible in the village, being sort of a landmark. The roof technique is from Derfeln Cadarn's Medieval village guide.

The pub owners seems to be a solitary man, and his little room upstairs is messy but comfortable. His secret receipt is held in a safe. He's also not a man that decorates the Christmas three very brightly. The tree is based on these with some natural adaption. It's same that I used on Eurobricks Christmas raffle last month. I won on the 1st of December (handful of figs from Marvel's Helicarrier) and my tree was on their calendar page, hooray. So here's a little tribute for that (because it saved me from building furniture to the corner, right enough).

The lorry is loosely based on old Saab lorries, but only loosely. The one-fig cockpit is more set-esque and not very true to actual vehicles, but it fit the overall feel there. I began with the fender and hood and most of time was spent working on them; I build everything first on black and them copied it in bleys and cool medium blue. The barrels on the platform include the products of our brewery.

I also used a handful of figs there. Some of them had been going around my minifig bins or tables for a while, but most were built for this creation. I wanted to achieve 50s or 60s British village feel familiar from numerous popular TV series. In Finland, at least.

MOC: Toa Nurukan

Babies and ladies, here's the (likely) last Klaanon creation for 2015 (at least before Christmas). This guy is Toa Nurukan, toa of earth. He is old and wise and has a big moustache on his bulky Kakama. He fought on the Great War of Metru Nui, but his memories have been manipulated: But they include hazy references to weapon organization The Black Hand and high officer ranks... Nurukan was also a close friend of Deleva and Umbra.

Nurukan is in some way a MOC that could be called Toa-mod, but I think I slipped in enough interesting details. The mask is brick-built, as it had to have a friendly muttonchops moustache (copied from Bombur, har har) and regular black Kakama looked too dynamic and light for the character. There's quite lot of SYSTEM overall, in the arms, chest armor (using old satellite solar panels - I like them!) and belt-mounted canteen (based on Finnish or Swedish military ones).

I wanted Nurukan to have military quality on him, but this old chap isn't so much of a warrior any more. He has wrist blades (with surprisingly working mechanism), which are not very logical weapon choice for old trench monster like him, but they probably refer to something in his past (I'm not spoiling you, if you want to read thousand of pages on Finnish Bionicle fanfiction. But good one, mind you.)

There's also a lot of more HF stuff than actual Bionicle parts. The blocky armor add-ons used on the knees and pauldrons are among my favorite pieces, though the round ones are even better. Bulked up Metru feet are used tho bring on a bit of Bionicle feel. They also create nice boot-like profile with the heavily armored lower legs.

MOC: Cohen the Barbarian

Gheng, Gheng, Ghenghiz Cohen! Merry Christmas to everyone. It is the Christmas evening and I'll continue my "tradition " of posting a typical old bearded man MOC. This one isn't very jolly though, and definitely not giving any presents. Actually he'll possibly steal everything he can. He's robbed thousands of temples, burial sites and tabernacles, stealing numerous gems, virgins and other pieces of treasure. In other words, he's a hero, in the old sense; After all, he fight monsters, crazy monks and so on... He's Cohen the Barbarian, aka Ghengiz Cohen, also known as Emperor of Agatea, aged ninety-something, He's Discworld's most (in)famous barbarian hero and leads his Silver Horde.

Cohen has been important character in three Discworld books, including the second one (Light Fantastic), Interesting times and awesome Discworld fable book The Last Hero illustrated by Paul Kidby; That one I can recommend to anybody. My creation is strongly based on its cover art, as you can see.

Building Cohen had been on my to-do list for some time; I though building old bandy-legged man in little bits of fur and leather would be challenging. Many techniques used on Dwarves and previous Discworld characters wouldn't have worked here, and I leaned lot on Boat Stud On TECHNIC Hole connections; It's one of my favorites. I Bricklinked 100 tan boat studs (one of my favorite parts) and around 20 tan TECHNIC connectors for this.

Building was relatively fast and straight-forward. The body and the limbs didn't offer very big challenges; Even the bandy legs came out nicely, even though it deemed some balancing with the cape and sword.

The head was the most challenging part and the last part I built. This is odd, because my bearded characters almost always start with the beard, then the head and then the body; legs last. Not here! Making Cohen look angry and old, very old, was hard. I pressed hid eyes deep into his skull and made a very powerful brow; Cohen isn't very pretty. The eyepatch was a bit tricky too; I was going to use black rubber band, but almost every one of them had dried and broken during the past years! So I just took one of those cord pieces, plucked the stud end on the eyepatch and stuck the bar end behind the ear.

Cohen also needed a little base to stand correctly, as the lower legs are pin-connected and can spin freely. I made just some snow, for the season and to be true to the book cover. But in all, Cohen's surprisingly sturdy.

And yes, again, happy Christmas to everyone, or merry, whatever. We got snow! Though it's going to melt again tomorrow, but at least that's something! I threw some snowballs to my sisters head and everything; hooray!

I'll probably be back before 2016!

If not, happy new year!

MOC: General 001

 Yes, I'm alive!

Even though it's pretty damned cold in here! But I prevail!

I haven't been posting much (anything) this year (hey, it's been only 17 days...). There have been several reasons: Foremost I landed on a new job at the beginning of the year. It's not a proper job, the state pays me a bit and I work 6 hours a day, but at least I work at art department of folk high school (or something...). I do handyman stuff and help on children's art classes; I've been studying there for 8,5 years myself.

So I have had a bit less time available than last year. But that's not the only problem! It's bloody cold out there. Haven't been less (more?) than 10 degrees minus (Celsius) for two weeks! And it has been more 30 degrees minus for several days; For dear readers not familiar with the glory of SI system, that's -22 Fahrenheit. Temperature like that makes the brick connections odd; They don't really like to stay together, but they are hard connect again, too. So I never take that many shots during there freezing conditions.

But yes, the MOC! This is from Klaanon, Finnish multi-author Bionicle-ish novel project. General 001 is one of the main antagonists, probably THE main antagonist of the "war plot". He's the commander of the Nazorak, war-monging Rahi species that stands for purity, Na Zora. They were developed from villains of old, abandoned indie game project Guardian Versus Nazi Roaches. The character has developed from those times.

General was based on some Klaanon artwork, but I also took some liberties. Pearl dark grey (gunmetal) pieces were where I began, using Bohrok faceplate as the chest armor and KK2 pauldrons. The rather simple legs were built in a minute or two, but the arms took more effort; they were the most redesigned part of this. They use bits of the arms of Clam-type heavy diving suit from my Novo Atlantis creation; That mech's arms were originally built with 001 in mind. I though the padded gloves had sort of "officer feel" in them. The same effect was used on a bit less pivotal General  Nurukan last month. 2x2 round jumper tile is used here to add stability to the wrist connection.

The middle torso was another hard bit. I wanted it to be a bit longer than on average humanoids, and it had to have two small arms on it - Nazoraks have four arms. They are a bit smaller than the should be, but I didn't come up with any better solutions. I guess they are alright. But I'm very happy how the claw/wing pieces work with the Bohrok shell; Those pieces are wonderful!

General is an old warrior and fight with a traditional officer cutlass and a pistol. I tried to make the sword using one of many Bionicle weapon pieces, but there weren't any good ones - They're always too complex and biomechanical. So I went with a simple but effective SYSTEM solution using tiles and a curved slope. The gun, in other hand, (pun not intended) was simple; The shape was pretty much same all the time, though it went throught couple of different versions before settling in this one.

Next up an another Nazorak creation! What then, I don't know - I have several projects as always, but photographing them won't be easy... Until next time!

MOC: Hands of Blue

Two by two.

Hands of Blue.

Superhuman Nazorak agents? Yes. Horror story material? Yes. Obvious Firefly reference? Pretty much. Actually more like Men In Black? I'd say. Hands of Blue, Nazorak units 019 and 020, (I'm not sure which one this is... Probably I should build another one) are known for their matte black armor and weird technology on their mechanical blue hands. They can swipe memories, move things telepathically and emit ultraviolet lights. This MOC is actually capable of the last one!

Hands of Blue have been in Klaanon for years, but somehow I hadn't managed to build them until now. The main motivator behind this was getting a grip of UV led technology. See gifs at the ends of this post! The hands have strong blinking blue leds. How?

INIKA Technologies!

I opened couple of Inika swords with blue lights with a small screwdriver, removed the electronics and built a little structured around them. They have little rubbery pieces that work as a switch. I placed them in the holes of 1x2 TECHNIC bricks, and they are operated by pushing an axle through the hole. The light makes trans-light-blue ball socket pieces illuminate very vividly. The frame is a bit fragile, as the circuits have no actual connection points, but they stay intact if handled tenderly.

Other than the arms, this MOC isn't groundbreakingly revolutionary. The bohrok head shell on the chest reminds of General 001's officer armor, but otherwise the shapes are sleeker and lighter. Additional ankle joint is used to enhance insect feel. I'm very happy with the head; Hands's faces are covered with black visors, and their eye sockets are empty; I think Slizer head represented that well. Mantibles are a bit less aggressive than on General and Chima spider legs are used again as antennae.

MOC: Fury Road: Max and Furiosa

V8! Valhalla! Witness me, bloodbag! Mediocre, Morsov!

Mad Max: Fury Road was amazingly breathtaking movie. It was, like, whee, super cool. Flaming guitars and all. I think it's the best film of 2010s, so far, though I naturally haven't seen every film released since 2010; This might also be the best film of 21th century, but comparing it to Lord of the Rings trilogy and Spirited away is a bit problematic (Porco Rosso is still the best film though).

I think I started to make first version of Furiosa in June or July, month or two after seeing the film; But it didn't somehow work, the legs weren't poseable, they were just stiff like bricks. I knew from the beginning I'm going to build Max too - He's Mad Max, after all. First parts of Max (Head prototype and parts of the jacket) were build a month or two ago, simultaneously rebuilding most of Furiosa, and they were completed in a building fury last weekend.

Legs were overall the biggest challenge here; LEGO bricks doesn't give very good options for building human trousers that are poseable and natural. Fortunately both Max and Furiosa wear tight leather trousers, as baggy shapes are hard. They might be a bit robotic, but at least the posing makes the characters look a lot more natural.

The colors were interesting, too. Max's jacket and trousers look black in earlier films, but in Fury Road everything is covered in lot of dust so dark grey looked more accurate; Black is used only on Furiosa's undershirt and Max's harness. Both bleys and old greys are used together to create dirty look.

The clothing had enough details to make the building interesting. On Furiosa I'm particularly happy with the belts, where different browns add nice variety. The belt accessory with the steering wheel and the chains were nice touch too. Max's harness worn in the last third of the film includes lot of stuff and deemed lot of image browsing to get them right; The shoulder pad was always going to be the round CBBS add-on, a piece I love. Other things I like here is the dark tan minifig bag on the harness and the iconic leg brace on the left leg.

Max and Furiosa naturally needed some firepower to fight Immortan Joe's War Boys. Furiosa's sniper rifle was a obvious choice, but as it's impossible to make natural shooting stances with it, I also equipped her with a revolver (not based on anything particular, but there were lot of guns in the film). Max has a sawed shotgun, not used with the harness, but it was so iconic part of the character I couldn't miss it. And it is seen in the film, after all, just in a different scene.

I wonder if I should build Nux and Immortan Joe, too. I think I could. They both have their iconic look that would be interesting to catch in brick form. We'll see. But, until then, here was Max and Furiosa. I hope they weren't mediocre. What a lovely day!

MOC: Mustrum Ridcully revisited

$

I've written numerous times to this blog that I often come back to my MOCs and mod them. Seeing them on a shelf from day to day make you see things on them that could be done better. Sometimes I even end up building the whole character again: I feel like I want to have the MOC on display, but it just seems completely outdated... Last time this happened on Balin, my favorite of The Hobbit's dwarves, and now it happened on Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully, my favorite Discworld character.

The old version had pretty good face, and I liked the crossbow and hat. But somehow it felt unnaturally stiff, and was too tall compared to my other Discworld builds; that also made the hands feel tiny. I based my approach on clothes, drawing lot from Paul Kidby's art as usual (I didn't have his Discworld art books when building the old version), making Ridcully have elaborate waistcoat, dark red jacket, brown overcoat and wizardy robe. Sir Terry gave us mixed descriptions on Mustrum's clothing, and I think this is quite pleasant compromise.

Probably even more important change was making the character more lively and less stiff. I made the beard hinged, so I could push the head a bit backwards; real beards are flexible. I also tilted the had (almost identical to the old one) a bit backwards using some Technic. The trousers are shorter and the boots aren't ridiculously big any more; I'm actually very happy with their overall shape. 3x3x3 cone is one of the best pieces there is.

The shoulders were hard. The old one used T-bar connection, usually pretty good technique, but I switched it to ball joints to increase mobility. Both 4x4 wedge slopes and frontal bits of the robe are jointed to enable posing the arms.

Ridcully still has his hunting crossbow, but also gave him a Staff with a Knob on the End. He doesn't use very much magic, but usually believes that six-feet oak staff is at least as efficient!

MOC: Foraois

$

So, here we are, at the end of "Four Seasons" project, with the summer personification, Foraois (Forest in Irish). Concepts behind this one varied a lot; there's pretty much nothing from the first sketches here (I rarely sketch creations, but here I did few drafts). At the beginning there was sort of a harvest motif, with some crop, sun and possibly a sickle, but didn't fly. There was even a cornucopia idea, something that was at some point going to be on Lingeán, but that was too close to the sprout feet so I ditched the whole harvest thing. Harvest has never been anything I've associated with summer; I've always lived on a countryside, but not near fields; It's forest all around. This is Finland, after all, too northern for proper farming. So I went for long trumpet-style dress and a birch motif. Nationalist art, what?

I wondered the colors for some time. Green would have been logical, but I already used it on Lingeán. Yellow or bright light orange would have been nice too, but somehow too close to the skin color, and I wasn't sure if I could have hoarded the parts in those colors. So I ended up with white, as birch bark. Birch by far is the most common leafy tree species in Finland, and the green leaves on them is probably the most apparent sign that summer is, after all, here after long dark winter.

Not now though, these was slight snowfall when I photographed this.

I build the dress in black at first to see which kind of bricks I need; My white curved part collection isn't too big. So I have (so far headless) WIP with 78% same design (upper torso is different with single strap, and the arms are bare), and it's actually the original. I bought white parts from two Bricklink stores, most from Finland and some from France. The dress has some SNOT, as the lower part is identical on both front and the back. 90s hinged car roof are excellent for this kind of  180 degree plate SNOT!

Black is secondary color here. It's not very summer-y color, I think, but birch branches are black, and hell it's easy color to work with. Naturally there would also be some green. I was thinking of doing a sort of a scarf or a shawl with it, but they developed into something bigger and snazzier. Autumn and Spring girls had rather ordinary clothes, but Forfhuarú had those striking ice wings, and I though it would balance things to give summer one something extraordinary. The leaf snakes were even crazier at first, but gravity pulled them down after a while, so I had to make them sturdier.

Head was (almost) the last part. I knew I'd make black hair (winter had white) and bat wings worked rather nicely. The rest was harder. Ehlek's spikes used in Lady Liberty-like manner saved the case, also being a note to Forfhuarú's icy crown. But it also caused problems: It kept pulling the head halves apart. I actually took a set of photos in same session with Ridcully, but the head looked bad on almost all of them, and I reworked it a bit: I made the structure sturdier, loosened the crown and added some hair, including the bangs. It improved a lot!

I naturally also made a base. This one is similar to Fómhar's leaf base, but more organized, creating a star-like shape. I also added some lever-base-boosted flowers to it, but they too are organized to the corners. But then I felt that it wasn't enough, and the character needed something else, probably an animal friend! I though of a fox or hare, but didn't feel like building another mammal, so I went for a bird to sit on a finger; a little posing aid. It was a White Wagtail at first, but the grey color felt a bit bland, and I went with a magpie instead. Magpie is a very common bird around here, but a beautiful one, with its dark green wing marks and the long tail. They are also very clever and playful animals, definitely worth being in this MOC.

These series, along with dozens of other MOCs, will be on display on "Leiki LEGOilla 2016" event at Imatra, Eastern Finland, during this weekend. So if you happen to be around, take a visit; It's at Imatran Kylpylä (spa). There's sale area and everything!

MOC: Mace-bearer

Sorry for inactivity during these couple of months. I've been working, but don't get that wrong - I've also built a lot! I have been working on modular buildings for our LUG show at Model Expo 2016 in April. I have five buildings to do, three of them are mosty done, and then there's an additinal stand-alone house for a contest. It's somewhat refreshing to work on minifig scale, but don't worry, I've had time for some character builds too... Here's the first, though there's another, completely different one coming soon.

Who is this? No idea! But the idea was to build a muscular warrior with a spiked mace, using dark green with those glorious speckle-black copper KK2 armor pieces. I think this is a female character, being of the same "theme" than builds like Cyira the Paladin and Annya. But I though that hell, no need to underscore the gender this time: Let's make this somewhat realistic costume to wear when swingin around a spiked mace. This decision was done when I plugged those armor pieces to lower legs. Otherwise the legs are my (boring) old type 1 female legs back from 2011 or something like that. Of course there's the long hair, but men can be have long hair too (Hippes, for example, and heavy-guvs. And cavemen). The hair's almost like a mane here, but it adds nice dynamics to the build, right?

The head overall was the challenging part. I liked the use that awesome KK2 mask part (Was is Karzon? Or was Karzon the yellow dragon fellow? Don't remember them KK2 guvs). The first version has also one of those shoulder/knee armor parts as a helmet (I have five) but it didn't fly... It was hard to connect properly and didn't really look good. It also had more samurai-like horns that weren't that good neither. These parts feel off eventually. For long this version had the bat-cross thing stolen from Moko's ancient minifigs on the forehead, but it was moved into the dramatic-looking brazier; sometimes simpler's the better.

This was a fast build. I made the legs in tomorrow morning and 90 per cent of the rest in couple of hours the same evening. This was finished today, though it was much slower progress than on yesterday. But around six hours, I'd say, on a model that is based on nothing. Pretty good.

MOC: Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson

Yeah, back in the Discworld again! Now it's time for an Anhk-Morpork City Watch character, Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson, a man raised by dwarves and the first voluntary recruit in the Night Watch. Carrot is six-feet-six-inch tall and his dwarvish name is Kzad-bhat, The Head-banger. He's honest, good-natured and honourable, despite the city's best effort.

Building Carrot began shortly after a LUG event taking place in Imatra three weeks ago. I got some flat silver 1x4 double curved slopes, which were perfect for Carrot's chestplate; He always keeps it shiny and clean, that decent he is. Commander Vimes's armor was dark bluish grey, as he prefect a bit old and beaten uniform, so flat silver on Carrot achieved a nice contrast between the two characters.

I also gave Carrot a dark red cape to make him look brighter and more heroic (mind you, Vimes can be pretty heroic too). Other reason might be that I had already used all my reddish brown 12x4 wedges.

Carrot doesn't have sleeves, as the visibility of his muscular arms is often mentioned in the books. He is also described wearing sandals (whereas Vimes wears second-hand boots) but I settled with the open-toe boots established by artist Paul Kidby. They are similar to Vimes's, if a bit richer in color. The leather skirt is almost the same, if a bit longer.

Carrot's head isn't the most interesting one I've build as he's clearly clean-shaven. But he needed an encouraging smile, so I had to meddle with some SNOT. I've used 1x3 arch as a smiling mouth before in Bofur, but back then I could hide the connections behind the moustache. This one was a bit trickier but worked out alright.

Carrot also has his "kingly" sword, that is only a plain and very sharp piece of metal; It's ultimately non-magical, which is odd, because the magical background radiation in the Discworld makes almost everything at least somewhat magical.

MOC: Toa Ruki

Toa Ruki is a semi-important Klaanon character, but she hasn't appeared in the story lately, because she got imprisoned on the Nazorak Empire's battleship SS Ironwing in 2011 or something and has been in captive even since. She is a Toa of Water with little or no battle experience, as she has trained to use her elemental powers for healing purposes; A classic fantasy class healer clerk chick here. She used to work as the reception of Bio-Klaani before the roaches but her behind the bars. Now you know that.

I've build Ruki before, in 2011. The MOC wasn't perfect, of course, but it was quite good back then. The upper leg design used here have been in continual use ever since, last used in Mace-Bearer. The old Ruki remained built for years and outlived most my creations, until I got tired of it few months ago. The shaping was just outdated and odd. So started to mod and build an entirely new torso using LUGBULKed Space Kitty tails to create wave-like shapes similar to movie version of Hahli.

The torso came out pretty nicely, and I left the rest of the MOC unchanged, photographed it and show it to some other Klaanon writers. I got some honest and essential feedback: The old legs were way too thick for the new torso, making the proportions very odd, and I myself highly disliked the old arms. I left Ruki standing (lying) on my WIP table until today. I worked the whole morning/midday on this, remaking the limbs entirely and redoing most of the already reworked torso. I also gave Ruki a little writing pad as she's the reception worked who likes well-done paperwork.

Technical details? The shoe design is altered from Japanese builder TAN, used on several of my creations. The lower legs are purely SYSTEM now (except for ball joints) as the old design was too thick. The Kiina armor skirt was always there, but I buffed it up with two more pieces (bricklinked a few, I like those a lot). The black battle droid fingers are not the best option, but I still haven't got any dark blue or blue ones and black skeletons arms are still quite rare. That's it, pretty much.

MOC: Atelier

This atelier, or an artist commune's workshop, was built for Collaboration building contest, building category, on our Finnish LUG Palikkatakomo's large exhibit on Model Expo 2016. The requirements were 32x32, 32x48 or 32x64 on modular base with minimum 25 cm (a bit less than one foot) of height. As I had built several modular townhouses for our modular city, I wanted to do something completely different; Last year my entry on the very same category was Ambrose Street 23. I got the fourth place on both audience and LUG member voting (tied in the latter) and got Basic brick box set and a Creator loc cabin (the one with a moose).

Building this started with probably the most striking feature, the tower with boats as (fake) window frames. I've seen boats used in similar fashion before, but never with those half-circle windows I got from Friends Grand Hotel won from Eurobricks' Winter Village Contest. They looked such nice together, despite the studded floor of the boat showing through. The also created a nice wooden color scheme which seemed fitting for the thue nature of the building.

Sand green is another color I used here along the brown shades. It looked nice and bleached, which helped to emphasize the nostalgic athmospehre of the atelier. I also had hundreds of sand green cheese slopes from LUGBULK and this seemed like a perfect chance to use them. Cheese slope pattern on roof looks always great!

This is obviously inspired by Pekkala Mansion in my hometown, which hosts a public art school. I've studied there as a hobby (three hours a week) for nine years and recently worked there as a trainee for three months, so artist life in not completely alien to me, no...

As this is an atelier, there is no need for sleeping facilities. There's however a small stove and sink for occasional snack and whatever, and naturally an outhouse or a privy on the backyard. The main room has large windows, as good lighting is natural for artistic work. The veranda is large and confortable, and as you can see, most of my artisting minifigs (including great wizard Vitruvius who looks like a great artist in his bathrobe and hippie shirt) are enjoying the fresh air.

MOC: Dragon Dance

Here's another of my contest entries from Model Expo 2016! And, on top of that, this was a winning entry on the city happening category! I got 45 points (LUG member voting). The second got 16 points so it seems that victory was clearly my destiny, as Meta Knight would put it.

The original entry had a different base. The size of the entry had to be 32x32 studs (this one is a bit longer and narrower and I displayed it on black SNOT road module, just next to my modular houses (coming to this blog very very soon). It was on the edge of our modular collaborative city (600x 32x32, no baseplates!) so it was well visible to the audiences.

I have no idea why I built this group of Chinese new year celebrators with their paper dragon. Of course those Chinese dragons are cool, and somehow I wanted to blend some Bionicle stuff on my minifig-scale SYSTEM display (which was so heavy I could take any character builds with me. 1000 km by train). I actually had built the road module for the happening entry before knowing what to build. Ideas included street theatre, tapirs on the loose (but there already was a cattle on the loose -themed entry) and movie filming setting, but I ended up winning with an oriental dragon; I don't complain.

I began building our papery salmon-snake by selecting some cool odd dragon pieces. Medium orange elephant tails were natural choice for whiskers, and I had had urge to use those Chima ultrabuild wings - very beautifully shaped pieces - for something since I got few in probably February. I went with a design reminding of Pokemon Gyarados; Though I think my dragon is a bit manlier (tougher moustache). This doesn't have any legs, but has couple of fins instead. I'm also rather happy with the central body using Bionicle ankle guards on rigid tube to create scale-like effect.

Designing minifigures for the parade was fun. I haven't posted that much minifig barfs lately, but believe me, I've been doing some combos now and then. Most of pieces are from Ninjago or Orient Expedition (excellent Adventurers subtheme - I collected every set as a 9-year-old). Of course there are some bits from collectable minifigs and various sources, too.

I was wondering what sort of accessories they have in Chinese dragon dace parades, and ended up with four paper-lamps built around Mistika air pumps. I've used them before on my Shanghai K8000 vignette, an another Palikkatakomo contest entry from 2013. This time those aren't light up, though. They connect nice and firmly to Bohrok eyes.

My victory earned me 31038 Changing Seasons, but also, and more importantly, a glorious DUBLO snail trophy. Tops!

"Okay guys, this is a cool ride, you can let me down now. Guys? Guys? Goddammit, let me down! Guys! Ernie! Goddammit!"
You know I'm not much of a car builder, but there was a vehicle category in our LUGs Model Expo contests and I decided to go full Fury Road. Of course it didn't have to be a car, the winner was a big grand cruiser by Legorides, but somehow I ended up with this. I also though of making early 1900s style tram, but didn't have enough time (wait for the next post for reasons). I came fourth with a tie.

This is of course sort of a mock-up of Nux car from Mad Max Fury Road. It ended up being more similar to the original; I though of making it a bit more civilized but it didn't work. I though that a gang of automobile enthusiasts saw the film a wanted to build something similar, and the two stronger fellows ended up tieing their butt monkey in the front. The rest is history. Or actually, this MOC.

There isn't too much to say there. The exhaust piping is probably the main attraction, pneumatic tubing proved its worth once again and I think those odd chima two-colored flame pieces bring life to otherwise rather monochromatic build. I'm also happy with the explosive spears angled using the tiny ball joints at the ends of those antennas (antennae?) I had to hunt a pair from Pii Poo's brick sale tables as the spears in the front were dark bley and dark grey at the beginning of our exhibit.

[MOC]: New Century Corner

Hullo, folks! Here's what I've been building for last few months (since November, actually, but intermittently). These five early 1900s style modulars were on display on our LUGs 600-module (one is 32x32 studs, no baseplates used) collaborative town on Model Expo 2016 in Helsinki Fair Centre couple of weeks ago. I packed them in a cardboard box and travelled 1000 km by train with them! Fortunately I made some of the buildings (unnaturally) thin, otherwise I couldn't have made it... Anyway, these buildings are based on my love of old, grand architecture. There are some strong Jugend/Art Nouveau influences, though most of these can't be labelled as AN in its pure form. Inspiration is drawn mostly from buildings in Prague, a beautiful city definitely worth visiting.
Buildings from left to right are:

House of Two Whistling Geezers: I'm very happy with the roof. It is based on a building located in Czech spa town Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad). I indented to use it on my long-time Unseen University WIP but it was too robust and turned out in to a modular house. The roof has some Gothic elements, but the elephant tail detail and the arch above the gateway are hints of Art Nouveau design. The faces of Two Whistling Geezers are reference to somewhat humorous faces typical in Finnish Jugend/National Romanticism style.

House of Two Sisters: The first house built in this display. Hoarded some nice old light yellow bricks in a LUG event and this was a natural way to put them in use. Is loosely based on Art Nouveau houses on the Central Square of Prague. I was surprised that I was able to photograph white-on-white so nicely.

House of the Bat-Lord and Three Sinners: Probably the most Art Nouveau-heavy building here. I wanted to use strong and dramatic colors, and the themes of the building evolved around them. I'm especially happy with the top part of the facade. The elephant tails are super sweet AN parts. This building doesn't have any particular real-life counterparts.

The House of Secret Society of Aviation: The main building. The wall on 45 degree angle is connected with TECHNIC axles that allow free slip; Therefore no challenging mathematics are needed. The 18-stud-wide wall is slid between the side walls with axles and piston connectors. It's surprisingly sturdy, as it's connected like that on two places, on the top and the bottom.

Designing this started with a large, lone window. The black inner arch uses some heavy SNOT and looked nice, so I Bricklinked pieces for two more of them (building with two large windows side by side almost always reminds of a face. Only human things). The shape of the building evolved around them. I wanted to use them on the second floor, so I had to invent something for the street level; I settled with a grandiose, almost church-like doorway and couple of elegant windows often seen on Art Nouveau Houses. I also went with strong geometric shapes with black, light grey and medium dark flesh. They created a nice contrast with the round shapes.

The dome, based on design of Castor-Troy and developed further with some dinosaur-tail iron arches, was going to used on one of the building, and this was the natural choice, being the grandest. I also had ideas of a globe, similar to one used on Tietz Store in Berlin before WW2, using Dagobah and clip-bar-rails as meridians (the Equator was tricky!) attached to a roof. Well, I thought that heck, better put all the grandiose elements in one place, and slapped the globe, finished with golden winged warrior, on the top of the dome, and connected the dome to the top of the biggest building... It's quite cool, if you don't mind me saying, and combined many elements I love in late 19th - early 20th architecture.

This is the only building here featuring a bit of interior: As the windows are rather big, there's a 7-stud-wide tile stove on the angled back wall, and a portrait of Fat Lady above it. The dome illuminated is somehow. The rest of the details include sand green SNOT cheese roof to balance the color of the globe and some Angel statues continuing the wing motif; Don't blink!

The House of Golden Frogs: I wanted to something different with the general shape of this building, and it turned out having white baroque-esque first floor and red second floor with some Art Nouveau elements. With glass doors and large clock this might be a public building rather than an apartment building, probably a club or a music hall. But there's no interior (it's not deep enough) so I'm not sure.

Again, the build started with the windows, which are similar to ones in the previous house but some elaborate and heavy. Some Bionicle parts are used alongside frogs and decorative elements from Friends Grand Hotel. The other key parts were the columns on the first floor using white wing elements for more interesting shape. Arranging the columns was tricky, but I'm happy with the result.

After finishing the buildings I had to populate the layout. There isn't much figures inside the buildings (okay, I confess, none, except in the gateways) as there isn't interiors nor always even floors, but there's plenty of fuss in the street. I wanted the characters to be from late 1800s or early 1900s, and there's some figs seen before in my steampunk dioramas or minifig barfs. But there are also some odd references. There's somebody up to exterminate a drunkard in the first portcullis. At the corner roof, the famous detective, his doctor friend and the (clone) folks of Scotland Yard are up to make an arrest. Johnny Thunder is visiting the city between his numerous adventures. Several nobs have gathered at the doors of the House of the Golden Frogs.

Now I've had enough of modular house building for a while, but I'm planning to eventually return to this layout and make a whole block, maybe sized 4x3 modules (128x96 studs), with four corner houses. But next up some character builds - I promise!

MOC: Arcane Samurai

This is one of those builds that had a strong original idea but ended up something rather different. The idea was similar than on Kira; to adapt well-designed minifig torso to a larger build. Accidentally this torso was from same character, Samurai X from Ninjago (this time the 2015 version). I intended the scale to be similar than on Kira, but it ended up being somewhat smaller, around the scale of Mace-bearer and Cyira the Paladin.

The colors were one of the main points here. Samurai armors have often dashing but earthly colors, opposed to (popular culture imaginary of) European knight armors, which usually seem to be silvery or grey. The colors are naturally based on the minifig torso, as is the bird emblem in the breastplate, but it was generally interesting to match the bright red and pearl gold parts with more toned-down ones.

This MOC also had an interesting blend of old typical techniques and some new experiments. The upper torso is pretty basic, with curved wedges on the sides and CBBS armors on the shoulders. The skirt, however, was challenging. I had several different versions, but ended up with this one with 90 degree angles on the side panels. It's very thigh, but allows some movement to the upper legs, which again are very basic type with roborider halves. The bulky upper arms were another part were I tried to create a distinct profile.

The helmet was a challenge, but also a joy to build. I definitely wanted to have a mask to hide the samurai's true identity and gender. I googled for samurai armors and was fascinated by cool yet scary mask which often had facial hair (carved or actual) on them. Somehow I ended up using CMF Winged Warrior's shoulder armor. I tried using it both two and one stud sides on front, but eventually ended up with the side with the neck guard as lower jaw. The helmet actually got remade just before photographing: the joint was actually on the back of the helmet, as I couldn't fit it into the middle of it. It looked awfully bad on most angles, so I fiddled with for an hour or something, until I made it fit; Used some of those new-ish 1x1 round tiles with bar and plume hole. There's even four TECHNIC cams in it to connect the CBBS armor pieces.

The katana is a basic one, with Ninjago blade and a simple handle. The flagpole was a late addition: I had thought about it, but wasn't sure if it needed one or not. I ended up building it anyway. Those masts are just pretty cool overall, and the flags from Orient Expedition's Dragon Fortress were just perfect.
